Yes, those frames are quite hard to finish nicely. There are lots of curves, there’s a lot of bare metal.

Usually you have two options:

• nice and expensive
• ugly and cheap

Fortunately there’s me any my ideas. What you see here is a pre-cut frame made of 1/2in Baltic Birch plywood. Those frames let you glue the fabric of your choice (as in the photos) and make as many mistakes as you want because they will cover your botched job. Each frame comes with two notches that hold it in place.

This is the one-piece Baltic Birch version.

Also available as 4 pieces that need to be glued together (cheaper) and also available as a high-end version made of solid bamboo plywood.
